Windstorms Can Cause Damage To Your Home

5/28/2022 (Permalink)

Green drying equipment on floor. Windstorms can cause a ton of damage to your property.

Windstorms can cause damage to your home.  The storms can last for a few minutes or they may last for a few hours and even several days when they come from large weather systems.  Wind speeds during a windstorm typically exceed 35 miles per hour. When cold fronts pass over mountains, cold air accelerates even more as it moves downslope.  Blizzards can occur when windstorms pass over snow-covered ground.

The causes of longer periods of windstorms are large differences in atmospheric pressure across a region and the jet stream winds overhead.  Windstorms can also create dust storms and sandstorms in dry areas. Tornadoes and cyclones also produce wind damage however they are usually classified separately because the wind speeds are much higher.

The most common damage caused by windstorms are:

  •         Roof damage
  •         Fallen trees
  •         Down power lines

It is important to keep your insurance up to date, just in case you need to make a claim, be sure to take photos of the damage that the windstorm causes to your home.  It may or may not be covered.  Insurance does not cover gradual damage, so it is important to upkeep your property.  After a windstorm it is suggested to check the roof for loose shingles or spots of missing asphalt as the wind tends to cause damage to the edges of the roof first, causing a chain reaction.  If the roof is old or you suspect it’s got issues you should have it checked as it could cause the roof to leak or rot due to water exposure.

Mold Damage Caused by Ice Dams

2/19/2022 (Permalink)

Road with cars during a snow storm. Pay attention to the ice on your roof to avoid ice dams!

Mold damage is every business owner’s nightmare. Unfortunately, there are many who assume that mold is not as much of a problem in the winter. This isn’t true. In fact, there are many different reasons mold might grow in the winter. One of these reasons is through winter storms and ice dams.

What Is an Ice Dam?

The first thing you may be wondering is what an ice dam is, to begin with. An ice dam forms as the result of heat escaping the building’s attic. This causes the roof to heat up and the snow and ice piled on it begin to melt, building up ice on your gutters and causing pooling water on the roof. As the sun warms it, this water can begin to trickle behind your walls.

What Kind of Mold Damage Can Ice Dams Cause?

Water trickles down behind an ice dam and this is what causes mold growth. Keep in mind that it only takes about 24 hours for mold to grow after a trickle of water has plagued your business. This means you have to act quickly to avoid the problem spreading. It’s important to remember that mildew and mold grow at a high rate and can get out of control quickly.

What Can You Do About Mold Damage?

The mold cleanup can be simple with the help of a cleanup service. With professional help, you can have your business taken care of in no time. Keep in mind that mold can be difficult to clean on your own. Not to mention, it can be hard to make sure that you get rid of everything. Mold spores can spread quickly and black mold grows fast. It’s important that you have it taken care of as efficiently as possible. Mold cleanup can be effective when handled properly and professionally.

Make sure that you always pay attention to the ice on the roof of your Big Bear, business, and the moisture it can cause. Mold growth can happen quickly and anywhere, so it is important to stay on top of the issue.

How Can Mold Enter Your Building?

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage behind wall. Water damage behind walls like this are a prime source of mold growth. Often, confronting mold growth is as simple as finding the source!

Finding black mold can be scary. You may have a lot of questions about how to handle mold cleanup, but you may also be wondering how mold got inside your building in Big Bear, CA in the first place. Generally speaking, mold grows as a result of a moisture problem, and there are a number of ways the moisture content and humidity level of your building can get out of control.

1. Burst Pipes

You need to maintain your building’s plumbing system often to prevent pipes from bursting and flooding an area of the property. There are a number of ways pipes can break, including development of a significant clog. Additionally, if the pipes freeze, then they will be at an increased risk of bursting.

2. Flooding From Storms

You also need to be extremely cautious of black mold development if your building is in an area that is prone to flooding. Flash flooding can occur at a moment’s notice, but there are various ways to safeguard the area.

3. Flooding From Backed-Up Sewer System

Your building has a sewer line where all waste travels into the city’s sewer system. If you are not careful, this sewer line can back up and flood your building. This waste water is more likely to carry contaminants, so you need to get your building’s septic tank cleaned once every couple of years.

4. High Humidity

Ideally, you should have a humidity level in your building that is less than 50 percent. Some humidity is fine to prevent the air from feeling too dry and negatively impacting your sinuses. However, too much increases the chances of mold growing.

You may not always be able to prevent a pipe from bursting, but you can take steps to make the likelihood less. You can also take steps to reduce humidity if it is often too high so that black mold is less of a threat.

How To Handle Ice Dams That Cause Mold on Your Property

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage inside wall. This wall was severely damaged after ice dams caused roof leaks. SERVPRO addresses the full extent of the damage!

Winter weather makes for beautiful scenery, but it can spell disaster for property owners. If you’re a building owner in Big Bear, CA and you experience the headache of an ice dam after a winter storm, you’re also dealing with the possibility of black mold. Read on to learn how ice dams form on your rooftop and how to address them, whether through quick fixes or with professional mold cleanup once a leak has already spread.

A typical ice dam forms in one of two ways:

  1. Heat from inside the building rises to the roof, causing the roof’s surface to heat up and a thin layer of snow above it to melt. However, the layers on top never melt, causing water buildup that has nowhere to run off. This buildup turns into a block of ice and causes the dam effect.
  2. Once the storm clears and the sun returns, the heat from the sun’s rays melts the snow. Unfortunately, once the sun sets and the temperature drops, this water then becomes ice and creates a similar problem. Any backed-up water leaks back into the roof shingles or walls of the building, leading to excess moisture and the potential for mold growth.

How You Can Handle a Dam That’s Already Formed

If a dam has already formed, it’s best to act quickly to prevent any further damage from water leaks along the roof or inside the building’s walls. A few tips to try:

  •  Aim a house fan directly at the leak site so the cold air forces the water to freeze again.
  • Use a roof rake to remove built-up snow and let the remaining water runoff as intended.
  • Call a team of mold remediation specialists if you notice water leakage. They can scan for any mold growth and help you repair the water damage.

When an ice dam forms, the threat of water leaks and black mold becomes real. If the damage is already done, it’s important to call mold removal specialists in Big Bear, CA, who can handle mold clean up properly.

3 Flood Facts for Commercial Building Renters

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

Abandoned buildings were flooded. Flood damage restoration and cleanup are no problem for SERVPRO! If you've experienced a fire in your building, call the right company!

3 Flood Facts for Renters of Commercial Buildings

Renting a Big Bear City, CA, commercial building comes with many responsibilities. However, you may not be aware of your duties before and after a flood. Flooding can have a number of sources and may not be covered by basic renter’s insurance. Understanding the facts about flooding, as well as your responsibilities and rights as a tenant, can help you move forward with confidence during this type of emergency.

1. Building Repairs Are the Landlord’s Duty

If you do not own the building where your business is located, then your landlord should be responsible for repairing any flood damage. For example, if water shorted out the building’s electrical supply or damaged the flooring, it is his responsibility to call contractors in to make the necessary repairs. The repair of other systems, such as internet access, air conditioning and plumbing, also fall under your landlord’s accountability.

2. Flood Damage Is Not Always Covered by Insurance

Your renter’s insurance may cover fire or theft, but it is important to understand that most policies do not cover flooding under umbrella coverage. In most cases, you would have to purchase flood insurance that is separate from the policy you carry now. If you rent in an area that is prone to flooding, it may be wise to look into coverage that can protect your belongings and to research the cost of a flood damage and restoration service that can help you salvage important items.

3. Your Landlord’s Insurance May Not Cover You

Having knowledge of your insurance coverage in case of a flood can be vital to the survival of your business after a flood. In most cases, the landlord’s policy does not cover his tenants’ belongings, so it is important that you have effective coverage and update it as needed as you expand your company.

Flooding can devastate your Big Bear City, CA, business, so you may want to take the time to understand the details of your renter’s insurance. The more aware you are, the better prepared you can be in case of a flood.

The snow has fallen in Big Bear! Here are 5 things that you should do to get ready for winter!

12/3/2020 (Permalink)

We are here to help this winter season!

The snow has already started to fall in the Big Bear area. It may look pretty and be fun to play in, but it can also be pretty hazardous to your home or business.

Here are 5 things that you can do to your home or business to prepare for the colder and snowier weather.

  • Insulate Your Windows - this will help keep the warm heat in and the cold heat out. This will help with heating costs by keeping those pesky air leaks away.
  • Trim Those Tree Branches - As the snow falls, it will accumulate on the trees in your yard. This snow build up can get rather heavy causing the branches on the trees to break and fall on your home. Tree branch damage can get rather hefty.
  • Inspect Your Fireplace/Heater - You need to make sure that all chimneys and vents are open and clear. You don’t want to cause smoke to back up into your building or for a fire to start due to build up from the previous years.
  • Check Your Roof - Checking to make sure that your roof doesn’t have a leak saves you from possible nasty water leaks and ice dams from forming because of the heat in your house escaping from inside the building.
  • Clear Out You Gutters And Downspouts - Leaving your gutters clogged up with the leaves from the previous fall could damage the foundation of your home as well as cause ice dams. You want to make sure that your gutters and downspouts are properly attached to your building.

Not making sure that your home or building isn’t properly set up for the winter, can leave you with a lot of damage done to the foundation, over all structure and to your wallet.

We can’t guarantee that these things won’t happen even if you follow these steps. But what we can guarantee is that we can help with the clean up and restoration!

Prevent Windstorms From Causing Havoc

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

Wind is the flow of gases or air in motion. There are 4 types of winds – hot, cold, convectional and slope. Short bursts of high-speed wind are called gusts. Strong winds of intermediate duration are called squalls and long duration winds are called windstorms.

Windstorms are caused by large differences in atmospheric pressure across a region and strong jet-stream winds overhead. Horizontal pressure differences may accelerate the surface winds substantially as air travels from a region of higher atmospheric pressure to one of a lower.

Thunderstorm winds account for half of all severe report in the lower 48 states and is more common than damage from tornadoes. Wind speeds can reach up to 100 mph and have a path of damage that can extend for hundreds of miles.

The damages can contribute to tremendous physical destruction, injury, loss of life and economic damage. The effects may not be limited to wind damage, as heavy rains and flooding often cause havoc too. There are a few steps you can take to mitigate wind damage before the storm:

  1. Trim trees and shrubs as trees can snap or uproot and can turn branches into projectiles.
  2. Remove debris from your yard such as outdoor furniture, yard equipment and toys.
  3. Cover windows to guard against flying debris with plywood.
  4. Clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  5. Ensure that all roofing materials and fencing are properly maintained and in good condition.

We atSERVPRO of Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead/NE Rancho Cucamongaare here to help if you have experienced damage from a windstorm.

What do I do if my house is overcome by water from a storm?

3/21/2020 (Permalink)

Turn Off the Electricity - Turn off all electrical systems if you can get to your fuse box without walking through water.  If you cannot reach the fuse box without walking through water, leave it alone.

Evacuate the Premises - Locate a shelter. Get everyone relocated to the shelter as soon as possible.

Call for Help - Once your family members are safe, call for help. If anyone needs medical attention, call 911. No matter what’s going on with the flooded house, the damage has already been done.  Your focus must be on you and your loved ones’ well-being. After you’ve verified that everyone is safe and well, you can make calls to the proper parties to get the recovery process underway.  Call Your Insurer, make sure to clarify whether you need to wait for an adjuster to visit your home before you begin the cleanup and repair processes.

Document Everything - Document everything so you can show your insurer the extent of the damage. Use your cellphone camera to film or photograph all aspects of the issue. The water that’s flooding your home may include sewage or other hazardous material, so you need to take extreme precautions to not touch it. Before going into the home, suit up with appropriate protective gear, such as waders and waterproof boots.

Start the Cleanup Process - Cleaning up after a flood is a long, arduous process. You’ll need to remove the water, salvage any personal items you can, dry the space out, and disinfect any areas or objects the water touched.

Prevent Mold Damage - Mold is a big problem after a flood—and not just the type of mold that you might find in a damp basement. Toxic mold or black mold can have long-term effects on your health. To avoid mold issues, you’ll need to do two things: keep areas that flooded as dry as possible and treat potential problem areas with a strong cleaner, like a bleach solution.

What Are Ice Dams and How Do I Prevent Them?

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Icicles can be a sign of an ice dam, however they can form without icicles being present

Ice dams can be damaging to your roof, eaves, and even cause water to back up under shingles and in to your home. This can happen when snow melts from the warmer top portion of your roof and runs towards the colder eave, where it freezes. Heavy snow can worsen this effect, as it will hold the warmer air under the snow layer and allow the ice to accumulate. How can you prevent this problem?

1) Keep your gutters clean

2) Make sure heat sources to the attic are blocked and that there is ventilation allowing cold air to circulate in to the attic space

3) Insulate the space between the living space and attic

4) Clean heavy snow off of the roof with a roof rake

5) Install electric heat cable in a "z" pattern along your roof line

Always know, that should you have a problem, SERVPRO of Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead and N.E. Rancho Cucamonga is ready to help!

Let's keep hoping for more moisture and for the mountain rocks to remain where they are when it comes.
