Fire Damage Mutilated Currency?? Burned Money

Bureau of Engraving and Printing can Redeem Mutilated Currency

The BEP redeems mutilated currency as a free public service.  Lawful holders of mutilated currency may receive a redemption at full value when:

Mutilated currency is currency which has been damaged to the extent that: Its condition is such that its value is questionable and the currency must be forwarded to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for examination by trained experts before any redemption is made. One example of mutilated currency may be bills missing relevant security features.

Currency can become mutilated in any number of ways. The most common causes are: fire, water, chemicals, and explosives; animal, insect, or rodent damage; and petrification or deterioration by burying.

Free Public Service

  • Clearly more than 50 percent of a note identifiable as United States currency is present, along with sufficient remnants of any relevant security feature and clearly more than one-half of the original note remains; or,
  • Fifty percent or less of a note identifiable as United States currency is present and the method of mutilation and supporting evidence demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Treasury that the missing portions have been totally destroyed.

Every year the Treasury Department handles approximately 30,000 claims and redeems mutilated currency valued at over $30 million. Your money is important.

A tiny candle and a BIG mess

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Really! This really happened!

The owners of this weekend cabin accidentally left an electric candle on on their mantle when they left after a wonderful summer weekend in the mountains.

Next call they received was that their cabin was on fire and they better get up and see it.

We received the call from their insurance agent and we went right over.  The fire department was just finishing mopping up and we were getting prepared to do the board up of the doors and windows.

What a mess! Soot and water everywhere, blackened paneling, missing ceiling and roofing, smoke damage in all the rooms.

If you are so blessed to have a second home be sure that you leave it (and your main home) in a safe condition before you leave.  A second check on all things only takes a few minutes and could save you tons of heartache and thousands of dollars.

Dryer Fires Are A Serious Possibility

8/16/2018 (Permalink)

It is important that regular maintenance and inspection take place to keep you from having a dryer fire in your home.

1. Get the lint OUT of all the ducting

2. Install with care - make sure the venting is not crimped

3. Clear out combustibles - move them out of the dryer area

4. Opt for a metal dryer duct

5. Read tags, they matter - items recommended to be dried on LOW should be or they may catch on fire

6. Exercise extra caution with            flammable liquids

7. Use your clothes to analyze problems - are they not drying as soon as they should - problem!

8. Don't dry and dash- stay home while the dryer is running.

9. Give the outdoor vent a peak - make sure it is clear

Fire Pit Safety

8/15/2018 (Permalink)

Back yard fire pits are all the trend this year.  They are so great to sit around and enjoy!

But, you must be real careful of where you place your fire pit, whether it is a fixed unit or a moveable one.

They must be away from your house and away from trees and bushes.  You do not want to let the fire escape from the pit!

If you find that you have a disaster on your hands call 911 ASAP.  These kinds of fires can grow very rapidly.

Should your house sustain any damage please give SERVPRO of Big Bear/ Lake Arrowhead/ NE Rancho Cucamonga a call and we will come out immediately - day or night - to begin the clean up and to board up your home if needed.

This can happen so easily!

Fire Damage This can happen so easily! I think I burnt dinner!

You are calmly making your dinner and suddenly it catches on fire.  What to do????

Do you keep something handy to smother the fire - flour/baking soda/anything?

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen that is charged and up to date, and easily accessible?

The smoke from this burnt dinner affected every single room in the 3 story house and all the contents.  Smoke travels though small holes that go from floor to floor for pipes and wires.  Smoke travels into closed cupboards and drawers. Smoke goes where ever it wants to!

A very big tragedy.

Please be prepared to save yourself a lot of grief by taking a few moments to properly supply your kitchen incase you need to put out a burnt dinner.

Old Fireplaces Can Be A Fire Starter

Fire Damage Old Fireplaces Can Be A Fire Starter Old Fireplaces Have Cracks

We have so many older cabins and homes in our community. Many of them have very old fireplaces and chimneys.  Very old fireplaces and chimneys can be compromised by cracks, deterioration of the actual materials, and creosote on the interior walls of the chimney.

We work with several fireplace cleaning companies that recommend a yearly inspection of both the fireplace and the chimney.

We call them out for inspections if we feel the fireplace itself might have been the cause of a loss. And they call us if there has been smoke damage that needs cleaning up.

If there are cracks in your fireplace and you have a fire it could get out through the cracks and cause a house fire.

Please be proactive and get an inspection!

Smoky Smelling House?

Fire Damage Smoky Smelling House? How ozone works to eliminate odor.

Outdoors, nature eliminates odors and microorganisms using both UV light and O3. Indoors, most places that generate odors receive very little UV light or O3. The Odor-Free purifier creates O3, or ozone, in a special process that utilizes an electrical current. Ozone sanitizes by breaking down odors, microorganisms and other pollutants at their source.

Nature creates O3 as a natural cleaner during thunderstorms, and also from sunlight striking the earth’s atmosphere. As an example, we’ve all taken a walk after a thunderstorm and experienced the clean, fresh smell in the air. That's O3, or ozone, at work.

Normal oxygen (O2) is converted to O3, which is commonly called ozone. It reverts back to O2 in about an hour if the O3 is unused. This leaves the air fresh and clean because the source of the odor has been permanently removed. And there are no artificial odors so the space becomes free of odors, as nature intended. Employ the cleaning power of nature and create an outdoor fresh environment in your facility!
